منذ أن بدأ المسلمون بنشر الإسلام خارج الجزيرة العربية وانطلقت جيوش الفتح في مشارق الأرض ومغاربها واتسعت رقعة الخلافة الإسلامية، ظهرت الحاجة إلى إنشاء معسكرات للجند تكون مراكز للتموين والإمداد وتؤمن الإتصال بين الجيوش الإسلامية ومركز القيادة في المدينة، فأنشئت معسكرات صارت فيما بعد مدناً لها دور أساس في الحياة الإجتماعية والسياسية لدولة الإسلام مثل البصرة والكوفة والقسطاط والقيروان، كما كان لها دور في نشر الثقافة العربية الإسلامية ووضع أسس النهضة العربية وإبداعات العقل العربي في ميادين الحضارة المختلفة.
ويمكن القول إن التاريخ العربي الإسلامي خلال القرنين الأولين هو تاريخ مدن وأمصار، ومدينة الكوفة موضوع البحث هي إحدى هذه المدن، ويرجع الدور الرئيس لهذه الأحداث إلى رؤساء وأشراف القبائل، وكان على أفراد القبيلة طاعة زعمائهم ومن هنا جاء اختيار هذه الدراسة بعنوان (الإتجاهات السياسية للقبائل في الكوفة في القرن الأول الهجري).
