وهذا الكتاب يستخدم أدب الرحلات بوصفها مادة علمية يسد بها بعض الفجوات التاريخية التي لا تتحدث عنها كتب التاريخ المتخصصة حتى القرن السابع الهجري.
وليس معنى هذا عدم الإستعانة بالمصادر التاريخية وإنما كانت كتب الرحلات قطباً ومحوراً في معظم بحوث هذا الكتاب أو أنها حلت بعض الإشكالات التي حيرت المؤرخين أو ألجأتهم إلى تناقضات في كتاباتهم.
فيحاول تتبع الرحالة واحداً واحداً ويستخرج مناهجهم في الكتابة ومصادر معلوماتهم ومدى إستفادة تاريخ اليمن منها.
