تتحدث هذه الرواية عن منطقة نجد لتحكي قصة الفلاحين والمزارعين فيها وذلك من خلال بطل القصة سالم الشاب الذي أهلته قدراته العقلية على السفر إلى الخارج ولكن العادة دائماً كانت تلزم المزارعين على الزواج في الصغر وهكذا تزوج سالم من ابنة الجيران حبيبة الصغر وتركها في بيت أهلها الذي ما لبسوا أن فسخوا عقد زواجهما غيابياً بسبب سفره الطويل، غير أن سارة كانت حاملاً وهي لم تخبر زوجها بالحمل، وإنما أخفت الأمر على الجميع، أما سالم الزوج المصدوم فقرر الدخول في حزب المعارضة في الدولة وشارك في العديد من المظاهرات مما أدى لفصله من الجامعة، ويقال أنه أثناء عودته إلى البلد سقطت الطائرة التي كانت تنقله إليها فشاع خبر وفاته إلا أن زوجته وأم ولده حملت في صدرها تكذيباً للخبر وبقيت وافية لحبه وعندما بلغ ابنها رشده قررت السفر معه إلى حيث سافر سالم هناك راحت تبحث عنه علها تجده... وفعلاً حدث ما هو غير متوقع إذ تقول لولدها فجأة وهما جالسين في المسجد محمد سلم على أبوك...
...وافق والد سارة على طلب الحميدي دون تردد، ولم ير حاجة لاستشارة والدتها، بل قام باخبارها، فسالم كان كابنهم، وكانوا يعلمون أنه سيتقدم لها يوماً. وهكذا انتقلت سارة من مزرعة أبي صالح إلى مزرعة الحميدي، واضطر أبو صالح إلى استئجار العامل الذي استغنى عنه الحميدي، بعد أن أصبح لا حاجة له بانضمام سارة إليهم. مكث سالم مع زوجته خمسة عشر يوماً، ثم غادر إلى الرياض، حيث تبدأ الرحلة...
