اشتهر المعتزلة في التاريخ ببلاغتهم وفصاحة لسانهم مدفوعين بما حملتهم عليه مهمتهم من دراسة اللغة والإحاطة بفنونها وطرائق تعبيرها ولم يكد هؤلاء القوم يتركون جانباً من جوانب دراسة اللغة إلا طرقوه ولا سبباً من أسبابها إلا تعلقوا به فكانوا منهم الجاحظ والزمخشري-أولى بالدراسة من سواهم وإذا كانت الدراسات الحديثة التي ألفت في المتزل وتحدثت عن تاريخهم وأفكارهم وآرائهم ونظرياتهم وفي علم الكلام كثيرة فما أقل الكتب التي اعتنت بالجانب البلاغي من تلك الدراسات كما أنها لم تتعرض للتأويل البلاغي الذي يخدم المعتزلة في تأكيد آرائهم ولا لطريقتهم في تسخير النوع البلاغي لصالح مذهبهم ومبادئهم.
ومن هنا كان موضوع هذه الدراسة (البلاغة عند المعتزلة) موضوعاً جديداً وحقلاً بكراً. والهدف من هذه الدراسة بيان أن المعتزلة هم مؤسسوا البلاغة ومؤثلو أصولها وكأن البلاغة علم اختصوا به وحدهم وتبعهم فيه غيرهم.
