الرثاء، من موضوعات الشعر العربي، وهو من أبرزها، لأنه أصدقها، وأبرزها تعبيراً عن المشاعر الإنسانية، لكونه يرتبط بالموت، وبالحزن على من قد ماتوا، وفارقوا الحياة، وكان الشعراء أشد الناس إنفعالاً وتأثراً، لمسألة الموت فوقعوا كثيراً أمام هذه المأساة الإنسانية ورثوا أحباءهم وأقاربهم وكل من يهتمون لأمره. وللحقيقة، فإن قصائد الرثاء جاءت متشابهة في كل العصور الأدبية باستثناء دخول الفلسفة عليها في العصور المتأخرة وظهور نوع من الرثاء السياسي والمذهبي في العصر الأموي والعباسي عندما انطلق شعراء كل فريق من الفرق يبكون قتلاهم أثناء المعارك الزائلة الذي فاق فيه الأندلسيون شعراء المشرق. ما بين دفتي الكتاب قصائد رثاء متنوعة ترثي المدن والحضارات والأموات، وقد اختلطت بالفلسفة وبالحكم والتأملات والزهد. لتصبح دروساً أخلاقية تذكر الإنسان بقدره المحتوم.
يبدأ الكتاب بمقدمة عامة، يلي ذلك إطلالة على قصائد الرثاء في ستة عصور متلاحقة، وهي: 1- الرئاء في صدر الإسلام: ويضم شعر: أبو ذؤيب الهزلي، والسيدة فاطمة الزهراء ترثي الرسول، وصفية بنت عبد المطلب وآخرين. 3- الرثاء في العصر الأموي ويضم شعر الفرزدق، وجرير، وأبو الأسود الدؤلي وآخرين. 4- الرثاء في العصر العباسي ويضم شعر إسحق الموصلي، وأبو نواس وغيرهم. 5- الرثاء في العصر الحديث ويضم شعر أحمد رامي، والعقاد، والشاعر القروي رشيد سليم الخوري وآخرين. 6- الرثاء في العصر الأندلسي ويضم شعر أبو البقاء الرندي، وأبو بحر بن عبد الصمد، وابن زيدون، وغيرهم..
