في مجموعته القصصية "محطة الهفوف" يظهر الكاتب حسن الشيخ مقدرة على خلق شخصيات ذات سيمياء فكرية، نتجاوز في مضامينها تصورات أن تكون القصة القصيرة كشفاً للمستور أو تعريةً للمجتمع المحلي أو هجاءً لعادات وتقاليد، بل السير نحو فهم أكبر للمفاهيم والأفكار التي تحاول أن تقولها القصة بأبعادها التأملية والروحية وغير ذلك من عبثية وفوضى وخير وشر، وألم.
في القصة المعنونة "محطة الهفوف" ، يرصد الكاتب حياة طفل لم يتجاوز الثانية عشرة، يجد نفسه مسافراً عبر (محطة الهفوف) على أمل أن ينتظره خاله في (محطة الدمام) يحمل صرته الصغيرة، مودعاً أمه بألم، حاملاً في نفسه الحسرة، ومتجهاً إلى الدمام لكي يعمل، وبعد رحلة العذاب، لا يجد من ينتظره، سوى (امرأة تخينة) وإسمها سعدية، سوف تستغل غربته وظروفه السيئة، وتتزوج منه عندما يكبر.
من عوالم القصة نقرأ: " ... أسندت لي عمتي سعدية الكثير من الأعمال المنزلية. بعد أن تجاوزت الثانية عشر خرجت للعمل وكنت أسلمها أجرتي في نهاية كل أسبوع أو شهر. (...) إلا أن الأهم من ذلك أن سعدية هددتني بتسليمي للشرطة إن أنا حاولت الهرب، لأنها ادعت بأنها أنفقت علي خلال سنوات طويلة دون أن أسدد لها مصروفاتي (...) في العشرين من عمري، تزوجتني سعدية".
