يلعب المعلمون دوراً أساسياً في نجاح الطلبة في الرياضيات، وخصوصاً في الصفوف الإبتدائية، وتنوع أدوار المعلم الهامة من مدير للصف ومقدم وعارض للمحتوى ومنسق للنشاط ومدير للمشروع ومرشد تعليمي، وهي أدوار تساعد بمجملها على تحديد تجارب الطلبة مع الرياضيات.
إن فهم الطلبة للرياضيات وقدرتهم على إستخدامها لحل المشكلات وثقتهم وميلهم للرياضيات كلها تتشكل من خلال التعلم الذي يتلقونه في المدرسة.
إن التخطيط لتدريس الرياضيات كما هو الحال في أي مادة أخرى يهدف إلى بلوغ أهداف محددة (نتاجات تعليمية) وبلوغ هذه الأهداف يعتمد إلى حد كبير على كيفية التخطيط لها، فإذا قدر للأهداف المرجوة من تدريس مادة محددة أن تتحقق يجب أن يكون هناك تخطيط طويل الأمد، والمادة الدراسية تتكون من وحدات وفصول تشكل الكتاب المدرسي.
وكل من هذه الفصول يتناول موضوعاً معيناً، وكل موضوع يتكون من أجزاء صغيرة تشكل النواة لمادة التدريس اليومي التي ينبغي أن يخطط لها من قبل المعلم، وبالنسبة للتخطيط المرحلي لتدريسي الوحدات والفصول أو التخطيط اليومي فهو مسؤولية المعلمين، لأن التعليم الحقيقي يحدث يومياً داخل غرفة الصف، والمعلم هو المسؤول الوحيد عما يجري داخل صفه، وهو مصدر هام من مصادر المعرفة للطلاب وهذا يقتضي تنظيم هذه المعرفة وترتيبها معرفة زمن ومكان تقديمها، والهدف من هذا الكتاب هو التعرف على أساليب التدريس الحديثة في الرياضيات.
يناقش الفصل الأول طبيعة الرياضيات، أما الفصل الثاني فيتضمن أهداف تدريس الرياضيات أما الفصل الثالث فيتضمن طرق التدريس العامة، وأساليب تعلم الرياضيات، ويبحث الفصل الرابع في تقويم تعلم الرياضيات، ويناقش الفصل الخامس التخطيط لتدريس والرياضيات؛ أما الفصل السادس فقد خصص لمناقشة موضوع التقنيات التربوية في تعليم وتعلم الرياضيات.
