في هذه الرواية تأخذنا "غيليان فلين" إلى زمن النكسة الاقتصادية الأخيرة في الولايات المتحدة الأميركية حيث كان الناس يفقدون وظائفهم التي أمضوا فيها عمراً، نكِ هو أحد هؤلاء الأشخاص الذي عمل كاتباً في المجلات لإحدى عشر سنة قبل أن يجد نفسه عاطلاً عن العمل، وكذلك هي حال شقيقته التوأم مارجو. وبعد اتصال بينهما يقرّر نكِ الانتقال من نيويورك إلى مسقط رأسه ميسوري مصطحباً معه زوجته النيويوركية آمي مقتلعاً إياها من بيئة مانهاتن ومحاولاً دمجها في بيئة ميسوري. ولكن، بعد مرور سنتين على إقامتهما هناك وفي الذكرى الخامسة لزواجهما، يحدث ما لم يكن في الحسبان، تختفي آمي!
ما هي ملابسات الاختفاء؟ هل غرقت في النهر، أم اختطفت من قبل مهووس، أم أن للأمر علاقة بزوجها المغرم بإحدى طالباته، والمدين للزوجة المختفية بمبلغ من المال استخدمه في افتتاح مشروعه الخاص؟
بعد تدخل الشرطة، تتعقد أنشوطة الحل فيتورط نكِ بفخٍ من الأكاذيب التي اعترف بها للشرطة، وكذلك يقع في فخ مذكرات آمي المولعة بالألغاز. ومع مرور الوقت، وتسارع الأحداث، وتحت تأثير ضغط الرأي العام والشرطة وعائلة آمي تقودنا غيليان فلين عبر متاهة من التعقيدات لتصدمنا بنهاية غير متوقعة على الإطلاق بل نهاية صادمة بكل ما للكلمة من معنى.
