يعد كتاب " بهجة النفوس والأسرار في تاريخ دار هجرة النبي المختار" لأبي محمد عفيف الدين عبد الله بن عبد الملك البكري القرشي المرجاني، المتوفى بعد سنة سبعين وسبعمائة من أبرز الكتب المتخصصة في تاريخ المدينة المنورة وخططها في القرن الثامن الهجري. وقد أبان المؤلف في مقدمة الكتاب عن رغبته في وضع كتاب في تاريخ المدينة المنورة، حاويا كل الدرر.. وانتخب ذلك من مصنفات كتب تنيف على المائتين. ومن خلال القراءة والتتبع، والرصد الدقيق لهذا الكتاب الموسوعي يلاحظ أن المادة العلمية والتاريخية والأدبية واسعة، تفوق المادة التي أودعها عمر بن شبه النميري، صاحب أول كتاب طبع في تاريخ المدينة المنورة، بل أن المرجاني في كتابه "بهجة النفوس والأسرار في تاريخ دار هجرة النبي المختار" أنفرد بأبواب إضافية، وهذا يكشف لنا عن أهمية الكتاب. وكان المرجاني حريصا على استيفاء المسائل التي تناولها في كتابه واجتهد في أن يجمع أكبر عدد من المصادر، تنوعت بتنوع الموضوعات التي عالجها في تاريخه، واستطاع أن يطوع المادة التي جمعها لخدمة الموضوع وتجليته. ولهذا ترجع أهمية كتاب " بهجة النفوس…" إلى استقصائه واستيعابه وجمعه لشتى الأخبار التي تتعلق بأخبار وخطط المدينة المنورة حتى عصر المؤلف. ومن منطلق اهتمام الدكتور " محمد عبد الوهاب فضل" بتواريخ المدن المقدسة، ولا سيما تاريخ الحرمين الشريفين، وقع اختياره على تحقيق مخطوطة هذا الكتاب. وبالجوع إلى نطاق عمله في تحقيق نص مادة الكتاب نجد ما يلي: أولا: قسم العمل في الكتاب إلى ثلاثة أقسام: القسم الأول ضمنه دراسة عن الكتاب، والمؤلف ومنهج التحقيق، القسم الثاني ضمنه تحقيق متن الكتاب، القسم الثالث: جمع فيه الفهارس العامة للكتاب والتي هي: فهرس الآيات القرآنية الكريمة، فهرس الأحاديث النبوية الشريفة، فهرس الأعلام، فهرس الشعر، فهرس الأماكن والبلدان، فهرس الأيام والفتوح، فهرس الأمم والقبائل والجماعات والملل، فهرس الكتب الواردة في المتن، فهرس المصادر والمراجع العامة في الدراسة والتحقيق، فهرس عام لمحتويات الكتاب.
