ينتمي ألن دالاس - مؤلف هذا الكتاب - إلى عائلة أمريكية عريقة في عالم السياسة، فالأب - دالاس - كان واحداً من رموز السياسة الأمريكية في أوائل هذا القرن، أما الإبن الأكبر - جون فوستر - الاس - فقد كان من أشهر وزراء الخارجية الأمريكيين الذين لعبوا دوراً بارزاً في السياسة الخارجية الأمريكية في الخمسينيات من هذا القرن.
وقد اختار - ألن - طريقاً آخر للتحكم في صنع السياسة الأمريكية، ألا وهو طريق العمل في جهاز المخابرات المركزية الأمريكية، فقد عمل خلف خطوط النازيين في الحرب العالمية الثانية، ثم أخذ يرتقي في سلم العمل المخابراتي إلى أن أصبح رئيساً للمخابرات المركزية الأمريكية، في فترة من أهم فترات عمل هذا الجهاز، وهي فترة الحرب الباردة بين العملاقين، حيث شهدت ساحة المخابرات الشرقية والغربية عمليات كر وفر، وعمليات إختراق عظيمة، كانت البديل للحرب الساخنة التي تخوضها الجيوش في ساحات الحرب.
وقد حاول - ألن دالاس - في هذا الكتاب أن يرصد هذه التطورات، وأن يقدم صورة شبه كاملة عن العمل في أجهزة المخابرات وعمليات التجنيد، والإتهامات الموجهة لوكالة المخابرات الأمريكية، وإرتباطات أجهزة المخابرات العالمية في الشرق والغرب، ولكن يجب ألا يغيب عن بال القارئ العربي وهو يقرأ هذا الكتاب أن الكتاب هو رئيس جهاز المخابرات الأمريكية، ولذلك فإن المعلومات الواردة فيه لا تعبر عن وجهة النظر الأمريكية فحسب، بل تعبر عن وجهة نظر صانع السياسة الأمريكية في العالم.
