يسرد "وليامز ساسين" الروائي الموزمبيقي في هذه الرواية الشاعرية التاريخية تفاصيل مذبحة فعلية وقعت في قرية ويريامو الموزمبيقية على أيدي الجنود البرتغاليين في كانون الأول 1972، مركزاً في روايته على شخصية الأشهب كونديلو" الذي يطارده البيض والسود، وهدفهم قتله ثم صلبه، إلا أن الشخصية المحورية التي تدور حولها الرواية هي الشاعر كابالانجو الذي يحلم بأعمال بطولية، ولكنه يدرك ضمناً إن عنف الاستعمار لا يمكن أن يقهر في أفريقيا الجنوبية إلا بقوة السلاح وبرفع البندقية.
