مثلت تجربة دولة المدينة التي أسسها النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم حالة المزاوجة الأهم والأبرز بعين الإسلام كعقيدة، وممارسة عملية واقعية، وكان للصحيفة التي وضعها بمنزلة الأساس الذي تم الانطلاق منه لتحيد أسس العلاقة بين أفراد المجتمع الإسلامي الأول. من هنا كان التجربة الوليدة في تحديد العلاقة العقلية الموجهة ما بين طرفي العلاقة "الإسلام-الدولة" والبحث في المفاهيم المعتمدة على الدين والدولة، وما يمكن أن ينتج عن هذه العلاقة الثلاثية الأبعاد.
إن العمل التاريخي المباشر الذي أشرف على تحقيقه النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم, استند إلى مقومين أساسيين تمثلتا في القرآن والسنة اللذين ساهما في تكوين العقل الإسلامي الذي أفرز العقلية السياسية. وبهذا ترسمت العلاقة ما بين الإسلام والمجتمع حيث تكونت جملة المكونات للنظام التاريخي والاجتماعي، يستمد منهما الإطار الشرعي، ومن هذه التجربة بالذات برزت الفكرة التي تؤكد على أن الإسلام يمثل "دين ودنيا" ولا يمكن الفصل بينهما.
