أحدثت مسألة الخلط بين مفهومي الإسلام والإيمان ارتباكات كثيرة في هيكلة المنظومة التراثية، فجعلت من الإسلام ديناً عنصرياً همّه الوحيد التفريق بين الناس: هذا مؤمن وهذا كافر، بدلاً من أن يكون ديناً عالمياً قادراً على احتواء الإنسانية والأخذ بيدها نحو التقدّم والرقي.
يحرص الكاتب على بيان الفرق بين الاثنين، وتفكيك عقدة شديدة من عقد المنظومة التراثية، ما يسمح بالتقرّب من رؤيةٍ للإسلام أكثر عقلانية وإنسانية، تمنح له بصفته ديناً المفهوم الذي يستحقّه، وتبعده عن المفهوم المسيّس له، وتُرجع إليه مصداقيته التي أفقده إياها الفهم التراثي له.
ويرى الكاتب أنّ الأساس في أي وعي جمعي، وأي مجتمع يريد بناء دولة، هو الحرية التي هي كلمة الله العليا، وأن الله خلق الناس عباداً لا عبيداً، وأن العبادية هي الحرية، والعبودية هي الاستعباد. وعندما تتحقّق وتتجلّى فكرة عبادية الإنسان لله بأنها عين الحرية، تظهر أهمية الإسلام. كما يرى أن هذه هي الصورة الحقيقية والطبيعية للإسلام، لأنه دين يتماشى مع الفطرة الإنسانية وليس ضدّها، ولأنه جاء يسراً للإنسانية وليس عسراً عليها كما يعرّفه الفقهاء وحماة الرؤية المؤدلجة للدين.
