تسهيلا لطلاب العلم والباحثين عن التراث الإسلامي في أمهات الكتب، عمل الأستاذ عدنان علي شلاق على إعداد وترتيب فهرس الأحاديث والآثار لكتاب "الكنى والأسماء" للشيخ العلامة أبي بشر محمد بن أحمد الدولابي (ولد سنة أربع وعشرين ومئتين – وتوفي سنة عشرين وثلثمائة) وقد أجمع علماء عصره على أنه كان من أهل صنعة الحديث ويحسن التصنيف. وفهذا فإن من أراد البحث عن حديث فيه إخراج أو اثر أو قول أو معرفة اجتهاد في مسائل الحديث النبوي الشريف يجد ضالته في هذا الكتاب، وقد شرع مصنفه على إخراج أحاديثه وما فيه من المسائل الفقهية، والأقوال المأثورة عن الصحابة والتابعين رضوان الله عليهم، والآثار المنقولة عنهم، وأدرجها في قسمين:
القسم الأول جاء بعنوان فهرس الأحاديث والآثار لكتاب الكنى والأسماء للدولابي، ويشتمل على فهرسة الكتاب بأحاديثه على أسماء رواتها ووضعها تحت مسمى "فهرس مسانيد الرواة ومروياتهم"، مع بيان لكل راوٍ ما أُسند إليه من الأحاديث والأقوال والآثار. فجاء ترتيب الكتاب على النحو الآتي:
أولاً: فهرسة شاملة لما ورد في "الكنى والأسماء" من الأحاديث والأقوال النبوية الشريفة.
ثانياً: فهرست أول الحديث ثم مشطراً على أحكام الفقه.
ثالثاً: ترتيب الفهرس على هجاء أول الأحاديث والآثار وشطراتهما مع ذكر الراوي من الصحابة وصاحب الترجمة (...) الخ. هذا في القسم الأول من الكتاب، أما القسم الثاني من الفهرس فجاء ترتيبه على المسانيد وفيه بيان ما أسند لكل راوٍ من الآثار والمرويات.
