توضيح المشتبه في ضبط أسماء الرواة وأنسابهم وألقابهم وكتابهم. كتاب يبحث في فن جليل، كان ثمرة للفطنة والحذاقة، والدقة والحيطة، مما يتمتع به علماء العربية عامة، والمحدّثون خاصة، إذ يعالج مشكلةً نشأت نتيجة لتشابه حروف الكتابة في العربية، واتحاد صوِّر بعضها كالباء والتاء والثاء والنون والياء، فيمسك كل لفظ على حدة، ويميزه عما سواه، ويوضح مقصوده ومعناه، وينصب من الضوابط سياقاً متيناً حول رسم اللفظ العربي، خشية أن يتسلل إليه ما يشوّه وجهه، ويغيّر صورته. هذا وتطلق كلمة المشتبه في الأسماء والأنساب على تلك التي يتشابه رسمها وصورة خطها، فيلتبس تعينها، أو يقع فيها ما يعرف بالتصحيف، وهو خطأ يعرض في قراءة اللفظة إن لم تضبط ضبطاً تاماً، أو لم تؤخذ بالرواية والتلقي من أفواه الرجال ومن هنا قالوا: في تعريف التصحيف: هو أن يأخذ الرجل اللفظ من قراءته في صحيفة، ولم يكن سمعه من الرجال، فيغيره عن الصواب. ومنشأه تشابه صور الحروف في العربية كما بيّنا سابقاً، فكيف نشأت هذه المشكلة، وما هو خطرها وأثرها، وكيف عالجها العلماء، ومن صنّف فيها؟
هذا ما سيقوم به المؤلف في عرضه بشيء من التفصيل في مقدمته في هذا الكتاب، والتي جعلها مدخلاً لتحقيق الكتاب، والتي اشتملت على الفصول التالية: 1- المشتبه: معناه، وسبب وقوعه، وموقف العلماء منه. 2- المؤلفات في فن المشتبه. وأحصى المؤلف منها (55) مؤلفاً، بيّن فيها، باقتضاب، أهمية كل مؤلّف منها، وموقعه من المؤلفات الأخرى، وطبعته إن كان مطبوعاً، ونسخه الخطبة إن وجدت، مع تفصيل في وصف النسخ الخطبة التي طبع عنها كتاب مشتبه الذهبي في طبعتي ليدن ومصر.
ثم يذكر المؤلف الكتب الأخرى التي تمتّ إلى هذا الفن بصلة وثيقة وإن لم تعدّ منه. 3- ابن ناصر الدين: حياته ومؤلفاته. 4- توضيح المشتبه، أهميته ومنهجه. وفيه تمهيد عن منهج التصنيف في المشتبه، ومقارنة بين توضيح المشتبه وتبصير المتنبه وتحديد الأسبق منها بالتأليف.
