وضع هذا الكتاب ليلائم متطلبات بعض الشهادات الثانوية الدولية مثل: IGCSE وGCE وIB في اللغة العربية. وهي متطلبات متقدمة إذا قورنت بمثيلاتها من الشهادات العربية، من حيث الكم والكيف. ولذلك، فقد تم بناء الكتاب على نحو من الحداثة تناسب ثقافة ووعي طلبة يتلقون جل علومهم باللغة الإنجليزية، فجاءت أمثلته حداثية المبنى والمعنى في الغالب الأعم.
وجاء تقسيمه مشابهاً لتقسيم علم النحو العربي في مراحل نشأته الأولى، حين برزت الحاجة لتعليم العربية لأجيال اختلطت عليها لغتها، ولأجيال وجدت نفسها مندمجة في حضارة إنسانية جديدة هي الحضارة العربية الإسلامية.
فكان أن جعل المفهوم النحوي المستخلص من واقع اللغة المعاش يتصدر اهتمام كل درس. فهو البوصلة التي تقود الطالب عبر مسالك القضية النحوية المبحوثة، وبذلك فهو وسيلة البحث وغايته في آن معاً، يصل الطالب به إلى إتقان المهارة عبر سلسلة من التدريبات التي تناجز مهاراته العقلية العليا، من تحليل وتركيب واستقصاء، ومقارنة، ومقاربة وتخيل... الخ.
وعلى ذلك فالكتاب بني ليلائم طريقة "التعلم النشط"، حيث يكون المعلم ميسراً، موضحاً مرشداً، ويكون الطالب، مجرباً، مفكراً، باحثاً، وهكذا فهو لا يصلح لأن يكون مادة تلقن، إذا إن الكثير من جوانب الموضوعات النحوية التي يعرضها لا يمكن فهمها وإتقانها إلا من خلال التدريب والبحث، فالكتاب يسعى لترسيخ مهارات لا إلى تقديم معلومات. ولذلك لا يفاجأ الطالب إن وجد عنوناً يطلب إليه البحث فيه، فالهدف هو تعلم مهارات التحليل النحوي، وليس استظهار قواعد النحو العربي.
