إيكوكو، زوجتي الحبيبة! لا أعرف إن كنت ستقرأين هذه المذكرات أم لا. لكن ما فائدة طرح هذا السؤال إن كنت ستجزمين بأنك لن تفعلي ذلك. لكنك إن فعلت، فأرجو أن تصدقي أن ما تقرئينه ليس من نسج الخيال، بل إن كل كلمة فيه صادقة وحقيقية. لن ألح أكثر، لأن كل ذلك يبدو مريباً، والمذكرات وحدها التي ستشهد على صدقه.
