يتناول هذا الكتاب أحد المواضيع الهامة في حقل الدراسات الأنثروبولوجية، المتمثل في ظاهرة "الطُلبه" بإعتبارها كاشفاً للتمثلات والممارسات المُتصلة بالمُقدَّس الشعبي، وبمرجعيتين، السحرية والدينية.
من هنا، يندرج موضوع هذا الكتاب في الدراسات التي تناولت المعتقدات الشعبية بإعتبارها مجموعة من المعارف والتصورات الشعبية، المتعلقة بالكون ما فوق الطبيعي، تعبر عن نظرة معينة عن نشأته، وتركيبته وغيرها من المسائل.
تتسم هذه المعتقدات المتصلة بالطُلبه بخصائص تميزها عن سائر أنواع المعتقدات الشعبية الأخرى، فهي من جهة أصعب في التناول وأشق في الدراسة لأنها مستبطنة، ليست موضوع تلقين واسع، لكنها تتشكل بصعوبة على خلاف اللهجة المنطوقة والمكتوبة مثلاً، ولكنها تتطلب وجود مجتمع يتفق على رموزها.
كما أنّ اللباس الشعبي وأدوات الزينة عناصر ثقافية تستمد قيمتها من إظهارها للناس، لا بد للعادات الشّعبية من أن تمارس فتبرز بالضرورة إلى الملأ؛ وهي مع تمكنها في أعماق النفس الإنسانية ليس حكراً على منطقة دون أخرى، أو على فئة دون أخرى.
في هذا الكتاب محاولة قراءة في التصور والإستعمال الشعبيين للمُقدَّس من خلال شخصية "الطالب" بغية توضيح الترابط الموجود بين الإلتجاء إلى خدمات هذا الشخص والتمثل الشعبي للمُقدَّس، والمبتغى من ذلك هو تسليط الضوء على جوانب ظل يحوم حولها الغموض، أعني فهم هذه الظاهرة وتفسير سلوكيات أناس بإعتبارها آثاراً منحرفة متولدة عن ظاهرة أخرى (وهي ظاهرة الأولياء والمرابطين).
