يضم الكتاب تقريراً قدمه معهد "ديولدوتش" حول التقدم نحو مجتمع قابل للبقاء يركز التقرير على التطورات التي حصلت خلال القرن السابق، معالجاً ومحللاً التغيرات الهائلة التي جرت منذ العام 1900 في محاولة لتأخير التحديات التي تواجه العالم في القرن القادم.
وقد تبين من خلال الأبحاث المقدمة أن النموذج الاقتصادي الذي تطور في العالم الصناعي والذي انتشر في معظم أنحاء العالم قد بدأ بتدمير نفسه تدريجياً، وهو لن يصل بالإنسان إلى القرن القادم ضمن بنيته الحالية. والسؤال هل بالإمكان التغيير والتحول إلى طريق آخر قابل للبقاء. وهذا ما تناوله الفصل الأول حيث يصف كيف سيكون شكل الاقتصاد القابل للبقاء وفي الفصل العاشر هناك وصف للسياسات التي يجب اتباعها للوصول إلى هذا الهدف، ومن المواضيع المثارة أيضاً في هذه الدورية موضوع ارتفاع درجات الحرارة الذي يعني وجود طاقة إضافية في مناخ الأرض، ويعني كثيراً من التبخر ومزيداً من العواصف المدمرة ومزيداً من الفيضانات، كما تم التطرق إلى موضوع الطاقة والمجتمع وثورة المادية، التخطيط لمسار جديد للمحيطات، القيم البيئية والاقتصادية، بناء الإرادة السياسية، المزارعين والغذاء، الأدوية والبضائع، تحسين مصادر ونوعية المياه، الحرب في القرن العشرين إلى ما هنالك من مواضيع تدخل كلها في صلب جهد الباحثين، الذين يتطلعون إلى مجتمع قابل للبقاء.
