التلفزيون أول وسائل الإعلام التي يتفاعل معها الطفل تفاعلاً مباشراً دون وسيط، فالطفل منذ ولادته يظهر كثيراً من السلوك نحو العالم الخارجي وفي أسابيعه الاولى من ولادته يثبت عيونه على أي مصدر وعلاقته بالتليفزيون تبدأ من السنة الثانية من عمره وتعتمده على حاستين من حواسه هما السمع والبصر.
عند بلوغ الطفل الثالثة يكون قد توصل إلى اختيار برنامج مفضل من برامج الأطفال يعتمد على الخيال والحركة والجاذبية من الصور المتحركة ومن سن 3 إلى 6 سنوات يرتبط الطفل بالتليفزيون ويشاهده بإنتظام وينظر طفل ما قبل المدرسة إلى التليفزيون على أساس أنه أداة مسلية وبديلة عن اللعب.
توضح الدراسات في علم الإجتماع أن أول إتصال بين الطفل والتليفزيون يتم في سن الثانية عندما ينصت الطفل مصادفة إلى برامج يستمع إليها شخص آخر، ولكن سرعان ما يبدأ الطفل إستطلاع عالم التليفزيون ويكون لنفسه ذوقاً خاصاً بالنسبة للبرامج التي يحبها حتى إذا بلغ سن ثالثة يستطيع أن يعرف برنامجه المفضل وطبيعياً يكون ضمن برامج الأطفال التي لها طابعاً الخاص مثل قصص عالم الحيوان والرسوم المتحركة التي تتميز بالخيال الواسع والحركة السريعة، والطفل في سنة الثالثة يقضي 45 دقيقة في المشاهدة اليومية وتظل هذه المدة في إزدياد لتصل إلى ساعتين.
