وتعد مكتبات الأطفال بأنواعها - بداية من مكتبات الروضة والمكتبات المدرسية والمكتبات العامة - في هذه المراحل عاملاً فعالاً في ترجمة هذه الأهداف والمبادئ إلى حقائق لأنها المكان الذي تتكون فيه عادة المطالعة وحب البحث وينمو فيه الميل إلى القراءة الجادة الواعية والرغبة في الرجوع إلى المراجع والمصادر، والإطلاع على الجديد في ميادين المعرفة، لذا نجد أنفسنا في أمس الحاجة إلى التنويه بالمكتبات وأهميتها، وذلك لأن الخدمة المكتبية أصبحت من أهم أدوات المجتمع الحديث، وأقلها من حيث التكلفة وأثبتها من حيث الفائدة.

وقد اشتمل الكتاب على ثمانية فصول، تناول الفصل الأول التعريف بمكتبة الطفل وأهدافها وأنواعها، وتناول الفصل الثاني مبني مكتبة الطفل والتجهيزات الخاصة بها، بينما الفصل الثالث إعداد المكتبي المؤهل والمسؤوليات المنوطة به، وجاء الفصل الرابع ليتناول عملية التزويد والإجراءات الخاصة بها، أما الفصل الخامس والسادس فتناولاً العمليات الفنية (الفهرسة والتصنيف) الخاصة بإعداد الكتب وتجهيزها لتكون في متناول القراء، ويشتمل الفصل السابع على الأنشطة والخدمات التي تقدم بمكتبة الطفل، وأخيراً تناول الفصل الثامن والأخير مصادر المعلومات المطبوعة والإلكترونية.
