تتناول فصول هذا الكتاب دراسة تاريخ القوانين والنظم الاجتماعية وذلك في تطورها الحضاري ونظمها المختلفة وخاصة في القانون الروماني والشريعة الإسلامية والنظام القانوني الإنجلوساكسوني، ولا سيما لجهة الخلفية السياسية والاقتصادية والدينية التي رافقت هذا التطور في المصادر والأدوار والمذاهب والمعاملات المالية والعقود وأشكال التعاقد والتزامات وما إليها.
واستكمالاً لهذا البحث يتطرق الكتاب إلى تطور التشريعات في الدول العربية مع تخصيص فصل لمجلة الأحكام العدلية إلى جانب عقد مقارنة بين الشريعة الإسلامية والقانون الروماني.
إن هذه الدراسة لا تقتصر على القانون بمفهومه المجرد وإنما تتعداه إلى التعرف على النظم التي سادت المجتمعات القديمة في أهم مراحل ونقاط تطورها بحيث نستشف منها الأساليب المختلفة التي كانت موجودة في تعامل البشر وطرق حياتهم الخاصة سواء ما يتعلق منها بالعائلة أم تلك العائدة للمبادلات المعيشية بشكل عام.
