يتحدث هذا الكتاب عن أخبار أبي نواس وشعره وهو ما جمعه الشاعر "أبو هفان بن حرب المهدي" ووضعه في مخطوطة نادرة عُرفت باسم "أخبار أبي نواس" . تولى تحقيقها الأستاذ عبد الستار أحمد فراج، وعدد أوراقها (35)، وهي ذات خط مشرقي جميل، ولأهمية هذا الأثر عمل الأستاذ فراج على ضبط المتن وتقويمه دون المس به أو حذف أي شيء منه، رغم ما في هذه الأخبار من بذاءة القول وفحش في التعبير، فسمى الأشياء بأسمائها حفاظاً على الأمانة العلمية، ثم ضبط الأشعار ضبطاً كاملاً، وردها إلى مواضعها في مختلف طبعات ديوان أبي نواس، أو في ديوان الشعراء القلائل المستشهد بهم، مع مراجعة طبقات أخرى وتحقيقات أخرى لشعر أبي نواس. واضاف إلى الملاحق ثبتاً بأهم المصادر والمراجع التي اعتمدها في التحقيق، ومن ضمنها مصنفات تُرجمت لأبي نواس استقاها كما يقول من حواشي كتاب "تاريخ الإسلام للذهبي"، وترجمات أخرى منها تواريخ الخطيب البغدادي، وإبن عساكر، وإبن كثير، وغيرهم. وتحتوي هذه الطبعة ملحقاً من ثمانية عشر خبراً من أخبار أبي نواس برواية أبي هفان، استخرجها الأستاذ عبد الستار أحمد فراج من "الأغاني" و "الورقة" و "طبقات الشعراء" و "معجم البلدان" و "تهذيب تاريخ إبن عساكر" و "أمالي القالي" و "الموشح" و "زهر الآداب" و "أخبار أبي نواس" لإبن منظور، الملحق بكتاب "الأغاني" و "ديوان أبي نواس".
من شعر أبي نواس وهو يشكو سوء حاله نقرأ:
لعمري لئن بيعت في دار غربةٍ / ثيابي أن ضاقت علي المآكل ، فما أنا إلا السيف يأكل جفنه / له حلية من نفسه وهو عاطل.
