المصنف هو أبو بكر عبد الله بن محمد بن قيس القرشي الأموي مولاهم البغدادي الحنبلي، المشهور بابن أبي الدنيا. ولد ببغداد سنة 208هـ 823م وتوفي سنة 821هـ 894م ودفن في بغداد. اشتهر بكثرة تصانيفه وتتنوع موضوعاتها، وهو موسوعي المعرفة، واسع الرواية، فقد صنّف بالقراءات والحديث واللغة والأدب والتاريخ والسير والأخبار والزهد والرقائق، وانفرد بكثير من موضوعات الزهد والرقائق والأخلاق.
وفي هذا الإطار يأتي كتابه "الورع". وفيه يسوق الأحاديث التي وردت في جميع أشكال الورع نذكر منها: الورع في النظر، في السمع، في الشم، في اللسان، في البطش، في البطن، في الفرج، في السعي. في الشراء والبيع. بالإضافة إلى ذلك ضمن المؤلف كتابه هذا طائفة من أخبار الورعين، وثوابهم.
