لعلّ الدارسين لا يشيرون إشارة كافية إلى أن تولستوي كان يتأنّى في صنُع أعماله الأدبية: كانت مسودات النصوص ورواياتها لا تني تتكاثر، وكان يعمل على نسخ النص حتى عشر مرات، ثم يهجره ويستأنفه... ليدعَه جانباً، وقد يدعه نهائياً في بعض الأحيان!...
وذلك لأسباب شتّى: فتارةً كان يرى أن العمل الأدبي لم ينضج نضجاً كافياً، وتارةً أخرى لأن العمل يتّسم بطابع شخصيّ مفرط؛ أو لأنه لم يكن يريد أن يزيد من خصوماته مع الرقابة.
فليس مدهشاً إذن أن تُلفي ابنته ألكسندرا نفسها، يعد موته، مالكةً لنحو أربعين عملاً لم تُنشر، وأن تُبادر إلى أن تدفع جزءاً منها إلى النشر، وكان فلاديمير تشيرتكوف يشرف على تحريرها النهائي.
وقد ظهرت ثلاثُ مجلدّات في موسكو، في سنة 1911 وفي سنة 1912، ونحن نجد بينها نحو عشرين قصة وأربع مسرحيات، وأعمالاً من الطراز الأول مثل "الحاج مراد" و"الجثة الحيّة"، أما المخطوطات الأخرى فلم يُقدَّر لها أن ترى النور إلا بعد ذلك بزمن كبير، وبرعاية الجمعية التعاونية "زادروغا"، في موسكو، لتظهر في طبعة الأعمال الأدبية الكاملة التي كان يُنوى إخراجها في سنة 1928 بمناسبة مرور مئة عام على ولادة تولستوي.
وبما أن الجمعية التعاونية المذكورة قد حلّها النظام السوفييتي فإن نّسخ النصوص التي كانت ستظهر أُرسلت سراً إلى باريس، حيثُ ظهرت بالروسية تحت عنوان: قصص ومسرحيات لم تُنشر، لليون تولستوي، بعناية الناشر المعروف جداً "كاربسنيكوف" الذي كان مهاجراً آنذاك.
ويحتوي هذا المجلّد على أربعة أعمال دراميّة وتسع قصص تُرجمت إلى الفرنسية، بعد ذلك، ونحن نقدّمها اليوم مع التي ظهرت في طبعة تشيرتكوف.
