قد تكون هذه الدراسة فلسفية، ولكن أسلوب البحث يعكس الوضوح والصفاء اللذين هما الطابع الرئيسي لكتابة كولن ويلسون، وهو يحاول أن يجعل الدراسة شاملة فيتحدث عن الكازانوفية والشذوذ الجنسي، وعبادة "الكلاسين" وعشق رؤية الجثث والسادية وجرائم القتل الجنسية وسواها... والكثير من الأمثلة التي أوردها المؤلف تبدو مروعة بشعة إذا انتزعت من سياق البحث، ولكن البحث يولد من الإثارة الفكرية ما يساعد القارئ على تخطي هذه الأمثلة إلى استنتاجات علمية صحيحة، وتبين الحاجة إلى التخلي عن المفاهيم الفرويدية واستبدالها بمفاهيم علم النفس الوجودي. غير أن محتويات الكتاب تتجاوز علم النفس لأن المؤلف يستعين بمشاكل الدافع الجنسي كمنطلق لطرح نظريته الخاصة عن "الوجودية الجديدة".
إن كولن ويلس الذي تعرضت شهرته إلى تقلبات كثيرة منذ أن أصدر "اللامنتمي" عام 1956، يثبت نفسه هنا مرة أخرى كمفكر جريء مستقل الفكر والنظر.
