أبو نواس هو ملك الخمرة بلا منازع، وشاعر من شعراء الغزل المشهورين. وإن كان في بعض غزله فحش ومجون، ففي بعضه الآخر تعفف ورقة وعذوبة. وإن عد ظرفاء العرب، فلا بد أن يذكر اسمه ضمن أسمائهم، هذا إلى نبوغه في المديح، والهجاء، والزهد، والطرد، وغير ذلك من الأغراض الشعرية التي تطرق إليها في شعره.
وديوانه مشهور، يطبع من حين إلى آخر بأحجام مختلفة فتارة يطبع بدون أشعاره في المجون، وتارة أخرى يطبع وفيه كل ما نسب إلى شاعرنا من فحش في القول، أو غيره، وأيا يكن موقف الناقد من شعره في الخمرة، والمجون، والهجاء، ومهما نكن في موقف رافض للكثير من هذا الشعر، فإننا لا بد من الاعتراف بشاعرية أبي نواس، يشهد على ذلك اتفاق الرواة واللغويين على جودة شعره.
قال محمد بن عمر "لم يكن شاعر في عصر أبي نواس إلا وهو يحسده، لميل الناس إليه، وشهوتهم لمعاشرته، ولبعد صوته وظرف لسانه". وقال أبو نواس عن نفسه: "أشعاري في الخمر لم يقل مثلها، وأشعارى في الغزل فوق أشعار الناس، وأجود شعري إن لم يزاحم غزلي، ما قلته في الطرد".
وفي هذا الكتاب من سلسلة "أروع ما قيل" باقة من روائع أشعار أبو نواس مبوبة في ستة أبواب، وهي على التوالي: الغزل، الخمر، المجون، الزهد والتوبة، الهجاء، المديح، كما وفيه طائفة جاءت في باب خاص أما المقدمة فاحتوت على نبذة جاءت بمثابة ترجمة للشاعر أبي النواس.
