الأسطورة هي قصة أو عقيدة خيالية أو مختلقة. كانت ترتبط بالظواهر والكوارث الطبيعية وتفسيرها. وتعتبر الأساطير حكايات مقدسة لشعب أو قبيلة بدائية، وتراثاً متوارثاً. ولها صلة بالإيمان والعقائد الدينية. كما تعبر عن واقع ثقافي لمعتقدات الشعوب البدائية، وعن الموت والحياة الأخروية.
يكشف هذا البحث عن العديد من الأساطير التي ما زالت قائمة في عصرنا هذا، ومعظمها يعود إلى المصادر الغنوصية الشرقية. ورغم فساد وهزل هذه العقائد الأسطورية، فإننا مازلنا نرى الكثير من الجماعات البشرية تعتقد بها، بل ويعتمد عليها الكثير من الفلاسفة والمفكرون الغربيون أو اليهود.
وبعد الاطلاع على هذا البحث سيذهل القارئ حين يكتشف أن تلك الأساطير ما زالت هي القيم الفكرية والدينية التي يعتمد عليها قسم كبير من المجتمع الغربي المعاصر (أوروبا والولايات المتحدة وإسرائيل وغيرها). وإن أول من نبش هذه الأساطير الغنوصية وأخرجها من كهوفها وأعادها إلى النور هم اليهود. وبفضل طبيعة عقيدتهم القابلة للمناورة والتعديل والاختراق، فقد اعتنق كل فريق منهم عقائد غنوصية، واستطاعوا أن ينشروها في المجتمع الغربي الذي أصبح فيما بعد مجتمع العقائد الأسطورية.
ولعله من الضروري للغاية أن يتعرف المثقف العربي على تاريخ هذه الأساطير، وعلى درجة نفوذها لدى بعض الأوساط المعاصرة ليتمكن من عزلها ونبذها.
