ومن المعلوم أن تاريخ اللغة من حيث النطق والتدوين تاريخ مجهول، فنقطة البداية غيرة معلومة لدى الجميع، فما زال النطق تفسره مجموعة من النظريات التي لم تأت بالدليل القاطع الذي يرجّح إحداها دون الأخرى، أما تاريخ التدوين فملامحه تبدو أوضح بكثير من ملامح النطق، إذ أن الرسومات والرموز والإشارات على الأشجار والألواح وجدران الكهوف، وتطورها وتحولها من حالة إلى أخرى تثبت أن تاريخ الكتابة نشأ عن طريق محاكاة الطبيعة بوساطة الأبجدية العراقية المقطعية التي انتشرت بين الأقوام المجاورة، واستطاع الفينيقيون بسبب موقعهم على حوض البحر الأبيض المتوسط، وأسلوب حياتهم المتمثل بالإبحار وصناعة السفن أن يهبوا للمنطقة مجموعة أحرف يستعملها الآن أكثر من ثلثي سكان العالم.
نعم إنه الرسم السومري والهيروغليفي قد سبقا هذا الحرف، لكنهما كانا على النمط نفسه الذي تطور به الحرف الفينيقي، فالهيروغليفي حرف صوري، والسومري رمز متطور عن كتابات صورية، وإن كانت هذه الإشارات مجهولة البدء والتاريخ إلا أنها تمتلك تلميحات كثيرة وواضحة تميزها من ضبابية تاريخ نشأة اللغة، وهذا ما يجعل المنهج التاريخي منقوصاً في الحصول على الكثير من التفسيرات التاريخية في تعاقب اللغات، ناهيك عن أن للغات المقارنية ذات عهد جديد لا توصل الباحث في المنهج التاريخي إلى حقب تاريخية يصل مداها إلى العصول الجليدية أو حتى الحجرية.
لذا بدأ المنهج التاريخي في علم اللغة يستمد محتوياته من اللغات التي تسنّى للمكتشفين الحصول عليها تنقيباً وترجمة ومعرفة، الأمر الذي يجعل المنهجين ذا مساحة واسعة من البحث والتقصي والاستكشاف، وإن دراسة المستشرقين واكتشافاتهم، على الرغم من ابتكارها، إلا أنها قاصرة فقيرة لا تنسجم مع اتساع آفاق هذين المنهجين، وما يمتلكان من ذخر معرفي يتعلق بجوانب كثيرة في علم اللغة، وهذا التضييق والاختصار الذي هيمن على دراسات المستشرقين اللغوية لم تتخلص منه دراسات العرب، إذ سارت على النمط نفسه من غير التفات إلى مواطن كثيرة أهملتها دراسات المستشرقين، كان في مقدمتها الجانب النحوي.
