يتناول المؤلف في هذا الكتاب بالتحليل والمقارنة موضوع النبوة في الأديان الكتابية-اليهودية، المسيحية، الإسلامية باعتبارها عقيدة دينية وظاهرة تاريخية ومقالة فكرية، جمعت أتباع الأديان الكتابية بقدر ما فرّقتهم. فحاول بالتالي إنجاز قراءة دينية جديدة متجاوز طريقة العرض والشرح محاولاً النفاذ إلى بنية المقالات المختلفة في النبوة ومبرزاً طابعها التاريخي والإنساني مستفيداً في ذلك من المفاهيم الحديثة للغة باعتبارها بنية، والتاريخ باعتباره إطاراً للفعل الإنساني، ولذلك لم يقع الاقتصار في فهم النبوة الكتابية على عرض المدلولات اللغوية والاصطلاحية التي توفرها المعاجم اللغوية والدينية في خصوص مصطلحات مثل النبي والرسول، بل عمد إلى محاول النفاذ إلى ما تستبطنه تلك المفاهيم من دلالات ومن علاقات بالأنساق النظرية المختلفة.
فكانت المدلولات اللغوية مدخلاً هاماً لرصد الأنساق النظرية المختلفة للنبوة ثم تنزيلها في أطرها التاريخية حتى يتسنى فهمها وكشف ما فيها من أبعاد ثقافية وحضارية.
