عندما يقبل الدارس على البحث في هذا المعجم اللاهوتي للكتاب المقدس يكتشف أنه أمام عمل فريد في نوعه، لم تسبقه كتابات أخرى في اللغة العربية لها الروح نفسها في البحث والدقة في العمل. ولسوف يذكر بكل امتنان الجنود المجهولين الذي نقلوه من اللغة الفرنسية إلى لغتنا العربية لكي يثروا المكتبة الدينية في بلادنا ويمدّوها بكتاب هي بأمسّ الحاجة إليه. يقول المؤلف، الأب كزافييه ليون دوفور اليسوعي، إنه بدأ هذا العمل بهدف أن يكتب معجماً لغوياً لمفردات الكتاب المقدس، فإذا به ينساق إلى جهة أكثر اتساعاً وأعم فائدة، وخرج من عمله بمعجم لاهوتي للكتاب المقدس. وما أحسن ما فعل! لأننا لا غنى لنا عن مثله. ولكن ماذا يعني بهذا العنوان؟ وما هو القصد من قوله "المعجم اللّاهوتي"، وكيف ينطبق هذا المعجم على "الكتاب المقدس"؟ على أساس هذا السؤال، تبنى هذه المقدمة، لعلها تيسّر على القارئ العربي تفهّم ما أبدعته براعة المؤلف في هذا الكتاب. ولعله من المفيد أن نبدأ هذه المقدمة بدراسة شيء عن الكتاب المقدس.
