أسهمت تعقيدات الحياة المعاصرة بمظاهرها المختلفة في زيادة المتطلبات المتوقعة من الفرد الذي يعيش في علاقة تفاعلية مع البيئة ومتغيراتها، والتي تتطلب منه التكيف معها والنمو من خلالها بحيث تتوافق فيها جميع جوانب شخصيته.
ونتيجة لعدم التوافق أحياناً مع متغيرات البيئة تبرز كثير من الأحداث والمواقف التي تقود إلى ظهور إضطرابات سلوكية أو مشكلات نفسية وإجتماعية.
وبناء على ذلك تعاظمت مسؤولية الإرشاد النفسي الذي تركز برامجه وخدماته وإستراتيجياته الإنمائية والوقائية والعلاجية على رعاية النمو السليم للفرد والإرتقاء بسلوكه، وتعديل النماذج السلوكية غير المرغوب فيها وتوجيهها بما يتلاءم مع قدرات الفرد وميوله، بحيث أصبحت الحاجة ماسة إلى التوجيه والإرشاد في مدارسنا وأسرنا والمجتمع بشكل عام.
كان التوجيه والإرشاد فيما مضى موجوداً ويمارس دون أن يستند إلى أسس علمية وبرامج إرشادية منظمة، ومع تقدم الحياة وتطور الإرشاد النفسي وأصبح له أسس ونظريات ومجالات وبرامج وتقنيات، ويمارسه أخصائيون نفسيون يتم إعدادهم في الجامعة ويخضعون لدورات تدريبية متخصصة في الإرشاد والعلاج النفسي، وتكون نظريات الإرشاد النفسي القاعدة والإنطلاق للمرشد لفهم المسترشد ذاته وتكوين نظرة صحيحة عن العالم الذي يعيش فيه، ومساعدته على تجاوز الصعوبات وحل المشكلات التي تواجهه.
يستعرض هذا الكتاب مجموعة من النظريات الإرشادية (العلاجية)، وكان يمكن التطرق إلى نظريات أخرى، لو سمح حجم الكتاب بذلك.
