الإمام الشوكاني عالم قدير جمع من العلم وأبوابه الشيء الكثير، فقد برع في العقيدة والتفسير والفقه والحديث واللغة، ومارس الفتيا والقضاء في بلده، ودعا الناس إلى الحق الصريح، والتوحيد الخالص، ونفرهم وحذرهم من العقائد المنحرفة والبدع المضلة، مثال ما نال من المكانة العالية، والمنزلة المرموقة، وخلف الكثير من المؤلفات التي أصبحت موضع الثقة عند كثير من الخلق في مشارق الأرض ومغاربها، وهذا التفسير من بين كتبه الثمينة، مؤلفاته القيمة، التي خلفها، والذي أودع فيه من الفوائد الشيء الكثير، حيث تعرض للترجيح بين التفاسير المتعارضة مهما أمكن، إذا ما اتضح له وجهه، وأخذ من بيان المعنى العربي، والإعرابي، والبياني بأوفر النصيب، وحرص على إيراد ما ثبت من التفسير عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، أو الصحابة أو التابعين أو تابعيهم، أو الأئمة المعتبرين، وقد يذكر في إسناده من ضعف، أما لكونه في المقام ما يقويه، أو لموافقته للمعنى العربي.
ونظراً لأهمية هذا التفسير، فقد رأى "محمد بن رياض الأحمد السلفي الأثري" القيام بخدمة هذا الكتاب حيث اعتنى بتقديم طبعته هذه بحلة جديدة، فاهتم بتخريج ما ورد فيه من آيات قرآنية وأحاديث نبوية كما وقدم له نبذة عرفت بالمصنف نسبه ومولده، نشأته وطلبه العلم، مشايخة الذين أخذ عنهم العلم سماعاً وقراءة، تلاميذه الذين أخذوا عنه العلم ومذهبه وعقيدته وأخيراً ذكر مؤلفاته.
