الصلاة هي من أجل الطاعات، وهي أعظم ما يقرب لرافع السماوات لأنها تذكر العباد دائما بخالقهم، وتوقظهم من غفلتهم وتكبح حجاج شهوتهم. وقد صنف في عظيم قدرها المصنفات لمعالجة استيعاب بعض ما ورد من فضلها من نصوص الشريعة وأحكام الفقهاء وحكم الحكماء ومواعظة الأدباء حثاً للعباد للمواظبة على تلك العبادة التي بها تسمو الروح، وفي لحظات أدائها تعيش النفس في رحاب الله تعالى وفي هذا الكتاب يتحدث الإمام المحدث الفقيه محمد بن نصر المروزي عن تلك العبادة. مقسماً حديثه ضمن ثمانية أبواب، تحدث في الباب الأول عن تعظيم قدر الصلاة وتفضيلها على سائر الأعمال مستدلاً بصحيح الآثار وثوابت الأخبار وما استقرت عليه آراء الفقهاء الأخيار على أن الصلاة شراع الإيمان وأخص شروط تمامه. وفي الباب الثاني صرح بأن الصلاة أجلّ أركان الإسلام الخمسة، وأن جميع الطاعات شروط لتمام الإيمان وأجزاء الشريعة، وفي الباب الثالث حذر الإمام المروزي من إحدى الكبائر وهي الزنى مبيناً بأن بارتكابها ينتزع الإيمان من النفس والذي تصعب عودته بعد ارتكاب تلك المعصية، وفي الباب الرابع يذكر المروزي أدلة بأن المعاصي توجب الحكم بالفسق ولا توجب الكفر، لأن باب التوبة مفتوح للعباد، وفي الباب السادس شرح لحديث الدين النصيحة وتفسير لحديث الدسوسة، وفي الباب السادس بين المؤلف حكم تارك الصلاة، وفي الباب السابع تفسير لحديث النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم في النهي عن قتل المصلين، وفي الباب الثامن ذكر الأخبار التي احتج بها المحققون من أهل السنة والجماعة على عدم تكفير تارك الصلاة كسلاً أو عمداً ما لم يجحد وجوبها.
