تكمن أهمية البحث في هذا الموضوع في أمور عديدة من أهمها: أولاً: شرف العلم بأسباب النزول، لشرف التنزيل، وشرف العلم مبني على شرف المعلوم، ولا شيء أشرف وأجل مما تكلم به سبحانه، أعني بكلامه الذي لا يأتيه الباطل من بين يديه ولا من خلفه تنزيل من حكيم حميد، فخير ما بذلت فيه الجهود، وصرفت فيه الأعمار الإشتغال بكتابه العزيز وفهمه وتدبره.
ثانياً: فائدة هذا العلم الجليل في تفسير كتاب الله تعالى، والكشف عن وجوه الحِكَم والأحكام التي لا تدرك إلا بالوقوف على أسباب نزول الآيات، وقال الواحدي عن أسباب النزول: (إذ هي أوفى ما يجب الوقوف عليها، وأولى ما تصرف العناية إليها، لإمتناع معرفة تفسير الآية، وقصد سبيلها، دون الوقوف على قصتها وبيان نزولها).
وقال ابن دقيق العيد: (بيان سبب النزول طريق قوي في فهم معاني القرآن)، وقال شيخ الإسلام ابن تيمية: (معرفة سبب النزول يعين على فهم الآية فإن العلم بالسبب يورث العلم بالمسبب).
بالإضافة إلى ما يتبع ذلك من تخصيص عام، أو دفع إيهام ونحوه.
