جمع الإمام أبو داود في كتابه السنن الحديث في أصول العلم وأمهات السنن، وأحكام الفقه، وقد كان له أهميته البالغة، بحيث صار حكماً بين أهل الإسلام، لأنه جمع أحاديث الأحكام، ورتبها أحسن ترتيب بعد انتقائها أحسن انتقاء بعد طرح أحاديث المجروحين والضعفاء. وقد كان الإمام الخطابي قد أحسن في اختصاره وتهذيبه، وعزو أحاديثه وإيضاح علله وتقريبه، وتناوله بعده الإمام ابن القيم الجوزية فهذبه نحو ما هذب الإمام الخطابي به الأصل. وزاد عليه من الكلام على علل سكت عنها أو لم يكملها، وصحح أحاديثاً لم يصححها، وتكلم على متون لم يتعرض لها وزاد أحاديثاً صالحة في الباب لم يشر إليها، وبسط الكلام في أصول الفقه وغايته أن يكون الفقيه إذا ما نظر إلى ما أثبته في هذا الكتاب من معاني الحديث، ونهجه من طرق الفقه المتشعبة عنه، حثه ذلك على طلب الحديث وتتبع علله، وإذا تأمله صاحب الحديث رغّبه في الفقه وتعلمه.
ولعلو قدر هذا الكتاب وأهميته عكف كامل مصطفى الهنداوي على الاعتناء به، فجاء محققاً ضمن قالب منهجي معاصر تبويباً وتصحيحاً وفهرسة، تسهيلاً لعمل الاختصاصيين بعلم الفقه وللباحثين والطلاب.
