اختصر الحافظ المنذري سنن أبي داود بحذف أسانيده مقتصرا على الصحابي الراوي أو من في آخر السند، كما خرج الأحاديث عقبها من باقي الكتب الستة ويبين ما في أسانيدها إن كان فيها مقال. وقد طبع معه معالم السنن للخطابي وهو شرح لسنن أبي داود وقد كمل شرحه بالجمع بين الحديث والفقه، كما طبع مع الكتابين : تهذيب لابن قيم الجوزية على مختصر المنذري لسنن أبي داود تعرض فيه لتصحيح أحاديث لم يصححها المنذري، وزاد تعليلات وشروحا وأحاديث وفوائد فريدة
