يستهدف هذا الكتاب... تحديد المرحلة التاريخية التي تمر بها مجتمعاتنا نحن: هل وصلنا إلى مرحلة استقلال الذهن وحرية الإرادة أم أننا ما زلنا نعيش تحت الوصايا الدينية والسياسية؟ ولما كان الوحي هو عامل التقدم، وكنا أمة تزهر بأن لديها وحياً، يكون السؤال بالمسبة لنا هو: هل قام الوحي بوظيفته في التاريخ في تقدم الجنس البشري واستقلال الوعي الإنساني أم أن لدينا تناقضاً صارخاً بين الوحي كمعطى مثالي والتخلف كواقع تاريخي؟
وقد قمت بهذه الترجمة على طريقة الشراح القدماء، النص وسيلة للشارح لعرض آرائه الخاصة في بيئته الخاصة لأهدافه الخاصة، كما فعل ابن رشد في شروحه الكبيرة، خاصة في "تفسير ما بعد الطبيعة" ناقداً في ثناياه "علم الأشعرية". أواصل هذا التيار الذي انقطع في شروحي للفلسفة الغربية، كما عقدت مقدمة طويلة عن فلسفة التاريخ قبل لسنج وبعده من أجل إعطاء نماذج لطلابنا من فلسفات التقدم ومفاهيمه المختلفة، وفكرة المراحل، حتى تساعده على إبراز هذا المفهوم من وجدانه المعاصر واكتشافه في تراثه القديم ومساعدته على الإجابة على سؤال، في أي مرحلة من التاريخ أنا أعيش؟
ولعلي بذلك أكون قد ساهمت في صياغة قضية التقدم في بلادنا والعودة بها إلى تراث الأمة ومنبعه في الوحي.
