أدت نتائج الحرب العالمية الثانية في العراق، إلى زيادة التباعد بين الشعب والحكومات المتعاقبة أواخر العهد الملكي، حتى بلغ التذمر والغليان الشعبي، درجة لا يمكن إخفاؤها. تفاقمت الأزمة الاقتصادية، وساءت الأوضاع الاجتماعية للشعب، وظلت الحياة السياسية أسيرة الأروقة في الخفاء، من دون أن يُدرك المستقبل الذي تخطط له الفئات السياسية والأشخاص الذين يقفون خلفها؛ فقد أدت إلى تداعيات وأوهام، ظل الغموض يكتنفها، الأمر الذي أدى إلى أن يسعى الجيل الجديد إلى التخلص من العهد الملكي.
عجلت أحداث مهمة في تفجير ثورة الرابع عشر من تموز في العام 1958، كان من أبرزها، أن ساسة العراق إبان الحكم الملكي، قد أهملوا النواحي الاقتصادية والاجتماعية، التي مسّت حياة الشعب وأرهقته، في الوقت الذي أخذ فيه هذا الجيل يتطلع نحو التغيير والتخلص من كل ما هو قديم ويقف حجر عثرة في النمو والتطور، وهو يشعر بالحاجة إلى إيجاد مجتمع عصري أكثر تطوراً. هذا إضافة إلى الاستياء المتزايد من قبل هذا الجيل الجديد، بعد أن أدرك خيبة الأمل في السياسة. ولذلك كانت نواة التغيير، هي الضباط المتحمسين ومن الرتب المتوسطة، يؤازرهم السياسيون من الأحزاب ذات الأهداف المباشرة التي يتقبلها الرأي العام العراقي، من بعثيين وشيوعيين وقوميين وديمقراطيين وليبراليين، التي كانت تحركها، في حقيقة الأمر، النخب الواعية والشباب المتحمس للتغيير.
تأتي هذه الدراسة، مكملة للدراسات التاريخية، التي تناولت فترة من الحُقبة الجمهورية. لقد كُتبت دراسات كثيرة عن تلك الحُقبة. وتمّ وضع الأسس لهذه الدراسة، على ضوء المتوفر من المعلومات من وثائق وكتب منشورة، باستثناء رأي المشاركين في تلك الأحداث، لأن أغلبهم فارقوا الحياة إلى رحمة الله.
