غاب قارب الفكرة التي أشعلتها لي لاوشا وابتلعتها أمواج الحياة الماضية التي تسيطر على سالم، ولأنه منهمك في صورة الماضي، صورته في طفولته وصورة أمه، صورة الماضي التي لم يعد يعبأ بما بعدها، فأمه فيها تحمله في نزهة برية بين أشجار الأراك ونافع يحمل وفايق، تحتضنه الزوجة وتخبئ وجههاً في نحره محاولة دغدغته، تطارده بغصن الشجرة الطيبة محاولة أن تمثل دور الحرامي الذي يحمل السيف وهو يهرب حيناً وحيناً يسقط ويتضاحكان بطاقة طفولية متفجرة، ترنو لهم الأشجار والازهار والأطيار والرمال، نافع مبتهج ويشعر بلذة العائلة رغم ما يقاسي ويحاول ألا يتحدث كثيراً لئلا يوقظ وفايق من نومها، عجز أن ينسى كيف أنها اختارت إحدى جهات شجرة الأراك وهي تقول هنا سنجد لك يا ولدي مسواكاً.
حضرت بيديها الناعمتين اللتين توليهما رعاية شديدة وترى أن نصف جمالها في أطرافها، بعد طول مجاهدة كي لا تؤذي أصابعها وجدت جذور الأراك، كانت جذوراً صغيرة جداً إلا أنها قطفتها لكي تعطيها لسالم، وكطفل يراهم دائماً يضعون السواك في أفواههم ألتهم جزءاً منه ففاحت رائحته ولسعه طعم السواك الطري في لسانه مما جعله يقذف ما في فمه ويخرج لسانه ويفركه بكم ساعده الأيسر فتنفجر في ضحكة لم تكن كلها لأجل الطفل بل أكثرها لتبهج الزوج أو تغويه وتبقيه رهين شفاهها وفتنتها.
