في المقدمة التي تفتتح بها إيمان العسيري مجموعتها القصصية المعنونة "عندما تشيخ الجذور" تقول: "من وحي الواقع المرير، قصص تعكس صوراً حية ... نتلمسها معاً بعمق، ونقف عند محطاتها ملياً، ونعيد التفكير فيها علّنا نجد حلاً ، أو ننقش حروفها على صفحة التاريخ لتشير لنا بسبابة الإتهام خجلى، من سلوكياتنا الجريئة !!!".
هذه المقدمة التي تشكل إطاراً خارجياً للسرد، تصدر عن مقاربة نقدية لجملة من أوجه الحياة الإجتماعية والعلاقات الأسرية، فيما خص علاقة الأبناء بالآباء والأجداد، وهو ما يتمظهر جلياً في القصة التي حملت عنوان المجموعة "عندما تشيخ الجذور" حيث انصراف الأبناء والأحفاد عن الجدّ وتجاهلهم له، فكانت الوحدة من نصيبه بعد وفاة زوجته، وليموت هو الآخر في المستشفى من دون أن يلتفت إليه أحد "حزن الطبيب على هذا الشيخ الذي نسيه أبناؤه واحتار ماذا يفعل بجثته. لم يسأل عنه أحد لتسلم جثته لغسلها ودفنها، بل لم يحضر أي منهم للدعاء والترحم والصلاة عليه". وعلى ما يبدو استنبطت الكاتبة مرجعيات هذه القصة والقصص الأخرى من الواقع، ومن ملاحظات ومعايشات عن قرب، لتأتي في النص مغلفة بإطار روائي هو نوع من العلاقة الجدلية بين الحكاية وراويها، بين المسرود والمكتوب، وكأنما شخصية السارد وأبطاله شخصية واحدة أو إحداهما مرآة للأخرى، وبهذا المعنى تعمد الكاتبة – كما يبدو في النص – إلى نوع من الرسم النفسي للشخوص الذي يجري فيه إسقاط حالاتهم النفسية على الخارج وفي علاقاتهم مع الآخرين، أي الشخصيات المكملة للحدث، بما يسهم في تظهير الحالة الإنسانية لكل شخصية.
يضم الكتاب تسعة قصص قصيرة جاءت تحت العناوين الآتية: "آلام الندم" ، "القبض على الماء" ، "بريء في قفص الإتهام" ، "تحد وأمل" ، "شمس المتقبل" ، "عندما تشيخ الجذور" ، "لاجىء في غربة الإستعمار" ، "وتوقف الزمن" ، و "ميزان الحياة".
