تعتبر رواية "مونتي كريستو" احدى أشهر روايات الروائي الفرنسي "الكسندر دوماس" وهي الرواية الوحيدة التي تدور أحداثها في العصر الحديث. يتوجه هذا العمل إلى الناشئة –بطلاب- كونه يأتي باللغتين العربية والانكليزية بهدف التمكن من اللغة الانكليزية من خلال الأدب العالمي. وفي هذا العمل يأخذنا الراوي إلى مرسيليا لنشهد معه ما جرى للسفينة التي يبحر على متنها بطل الرواية الشاب "ادموند دانتس" الضابط الأول بعد قائد الشفينة فرعون التي يملكها السيد موريل. وكان شاباً مقداماً شجاعاً، متميزاً بأخلاق من اعتاد مواجهة المواقف الخطرة والصعبة. وقبل فرار نابليون مباشرة من إلبا لخوض معركة واترلو كانت هذه السفينة تتقدم نحو مرسيليا ولكن "لا بد أن شيئاً ما حصل للسفينة...؟". تتوالى أحداث الرواية ليتهم ادموند الشاب بالخيانة ومناصرة الأمبراطور نابليون المنفي. وهنا يعتقل ادموند ويودع سجن شاتو بالقرب من مرسيليا، ولكن بعد مرور خمسة عشر عاماً على سجنه يتمكن من الهرب بأن يحل محل جثة صديقه المتوفى الأب فاريا بعد رميه في البحر، فسبح الشاب إلى أن وصل إلى شاطئ الأمان، واستقل سفينة صيد إلى إيطاليا، وغادر جنوباً إلى جزيرة مونتي كريستو واستخرج الكنز الذي أخبره عنه صديقه الأب فاريا، فيعود للانتقام بعد أن ورث هذه الثروة الطائلة...
