بحث المؤلف في نظرية هوبز الأخلاقية وذلك لأن آراء هوبز الأخلاقية تحتل مكانة خاصة في تاريخ الفكر الأخلاقي الأوروبي، حيث أثار مذهبه الأخلاقي مشكلات أخلاقية شغلت تفكير معاصريه وخلفائه. كما أن موضوع البحث لم يسبق أن بحث باللغة العربية، كبحث متكامل قائم بذاته. بالإضافة إلى ذلك إنَ شهرة هوبز، في عصرنا هذا، قد قامت أساساً على كونه فيلسوفاً سياسياً وصاحب نظرية متميزة في الحكم المطلق، وأن معظم الباحثين الأوروبيين قد إنصب إهتمامهم، بالدرجة الأولى، علة فلسفته الساسية، ولم يتعرضوا لآرائه الأخلاقية إلا من زاوية صلتها بآرائه السياسية –الأمر الذي يعني ان أية محاولة للتركيز على آراء هوبز الأخلاقية، وصياغتها في شكل نظرية متكاملة، قائمة بذاتها، ومستقلة عن آرائه السياسية، تعد محاولة جديرة بالإهتمام وتستحق العناء.
وقد إقتضت طبيعة الموضوع تجزئة البحث إلى أربعة فصول: إستعرض المؤلف في الفصل الأول بإيجاز حياة هوبز، ورصد العوامل والمؤثرات التي ساهمت في تكوين ثقافته وبلورة إتجاهه الفلسفي، فأبرز موقفه من الإتجاهات الفكرية والعلمية والسياسية التي كانت تسود وطنه، ودور الرحلات التي قام بها إلى القارة الأوروبية في إنفتاحه على الإتجاهات الجديدة التي كان يبشر بها كل من "كبلر Kepler" (1571-1630) و"غاليو – Ghalio" (1564- 1642) وتأثره بها.
وفي الفصلين الثاني والثالث سلط الأضواء بشيء من التركيز على أهم المؤثرات التي لعبت دوراً بارزاً في تحديد طبيعة نظريته الأخلاقية.
وبعد أن أبرز، من خلال الفصلين الثاني والثالث، أبرز الخصائص المميزة للنظرية: الطابع الإستنتاجي لها، والأساس المادي الميكانيكي الذي قامت عليه. فتناول في الفصل الرابع بالبحث والتحليل المقومات الأساسية للنظرية.
