إن الرسم الهندسي ليس علماً يختص به فرع من فروع العلوم الهندسية الكثيرة دون غيره، إنما هو لغة العلوم الهندسية ومفتاحها الذي يمكن المهندس من الاتصال بغيره من المهندسين في أي بقعة على الأرض، كما يمكنه من تطوير نفسه ليواكب التطور الصناعي بقفزاته الهائلة. ولذلك لا يمكن للمهندس الناجح المتطور الاستغناء عنه.
ويعتبر هذا الكتاب الذي نقلب صفحاته خطوة لوضع هذا العلم في إطار عربي، يمكن أن يعتبر مرجعاً لطلبة المدارس الصناعية والمعاهد الفنية والرسامين وطلبة كليات الهندسة وللمهندسين على السواء.
ولقد تعمد المؤلف الاختصار الشديد في التعبير عن الفكرة بدون أضرار أو نقص في الشرح والبيان، وذلك لإيصالها للقارئ بيسر وبسرعة. ولكون الاتجاه العالمي الحديث يميل إلى استخدام نظام الوحدات الدولية (SI) فلقد استخدم المؤلف الوحدات المترية التي هي جزء من هذا النظام في جميع فصول وثنايا الكتاب إلا ما ندر.
والكتاب يتألف من ثمانية عشر فصلاً، روعي في كتابتها البساطة في اللغة والاختصار في الشرح، كما زود كل فصل بعدد كبير من الرسومات الإيضاحية، إضافة إلى الكثير من التمارين التي تساعد في استقرار الفهم والاستيعاب.
