هذا الكتاب لا يعالج موضوعاً مبتكراً، فهناك العديد من المؤلفات القديمة والحديثة التي عالجت موضوع تأليف الكتب ومنهجية البحث التاريخي، ودراستنا الأكاديمية هذه حوت بين صفحاتها آراء وملاحظات مستقاة من تجربة تدريس هذه المادة عبر عقدين من الزمان، فلا بد والحال هذه أن تتضمن العديد من الأمثلة التي توضح ما نقترحه من أسس منهجية في دراسة التاريخ وكتابه، كما أن هناك نقداً لبعض الجوانب الفنية التي ظلت سائدة طويلاً دون تغيير أو تطوير.
إن التعمق في دراسة البحث التاريخي وأسسه يعد أمراً ضرورياً لأنّ أصول البحث التاريخي وقواعده هي التي تضفي على التاريخ الصفة العلمية، فلكل علم منهج وقواعد، ولهذا جاء هذا الكتاب الموسوم بــ(محاضرات في منهج البحث التاريخي).
وقد قسم الكتاب على عدة فصول تناول الأول مفهوم التاريخ وفوائد دراسته وصفات المؤرخ، ودرس الفصل الثاني مصادر التاريخ الإسلامي وكيفية الإعتماد عليها، وبحث الفصل الثالث أهم العلوم والفنون المساعدة في دراسة علم التاريخ، وبين الفصل الرابع ضوابط إختيار الموضوع ورسم الخطة وجميع النصوص؛ أما الفصل الخامس فقد وضع كيفية كتابة متن البحث وما هي أهم الأسس التي يجب إتباعها في هذا المجال، وكان الفصل السادس في هوامش البحث ومكملاته، أما الفصل السابع والأخير فقد بحث في ظروف مناقشة الأطروحة أو الرسالة وكيفية تحويلها إلى كتاب.
