يعتبر منهج البحث التاريخي ركيزة أساس في كتابة علم التاريخ لا يمكن الإستغناء عنها أو تجاهلها في عملية تدوين التاريخ من حيث الإهتمام بخطوات يتم فيها وضع التاريخ في مساره العلمي عبر دراسة منهجية تبدأ من إختيار الموضوع إلى جمع المادة وتصنيفها ونقدها وصولاً إلى الإستنتاجات التاريخية التي تقدم التاريخ على أنه علم الموعظة والدروس المستفادة والذاكرة الإنسانية الحية ومن خلال فهم التاريخ بأنه حركة الماضي بغية التمعن بالحاضر والتفكر بالمستقبل لصالح أمة من الأمم أو شعب من الشعوب.
جاءت فكرة هذا الكتاب ((منهج البحث التاريخي)) بعد سنوات قضاها المؤلف في العمل الأكاديمي الجامعي والبحث العلمي في القراءة والدرس والتدريس في أكثر من قسم من أقسام التاريخ في الجامعات العربية ومؤسسات البحث العلمي خلال أكثر من عشرين عاماً.
فضلاً عن التدريس والإشراف في الدراسات الجامعية (الليسانس أو البكالوريوس) والدراسات العليا (الماجستير / الدكتوراه)، وعملية البحث والتأليف المتواصلة طول هذه السنوات والتي أنتجت عدة كتب جامعية تاريخية وفكرية ومترجمة، وبحوث ومقالات عربية ومترجمة نُشرت في مؤسسات علمية ودور نشر في عدة دول عربية، وأجنبية معروفة.
وفي ضوء ذلك تمخضت فكرة هذا الكتاب ليكون حصيلة الخبرة المتواضعة هذه من خلال تأليف (مرجع) للطالب الجامعي والباحث التاريخي على مستوى الوطن العربي برؤية علمية ومنهجية أكاديمية واضحة ومركزة دون إهمال للثراء البحثي في هذا المجال لما سبقنا إليه من خيرة المؤرخين والباحثين والذين لا يمكن تجاهل دورهم في إغناء هذا الموضوع.
يقع الكتاب في مقدمة وخاتمة ومصادر ومراجع فضلاً عن ستة فصول اساس.
