في المقدمة التي يفتتح بها الدكتور خليفة عبد المقصود زايد كتابه المعنون "الوراثة الميكروبية" (وراثة الفطريات) يشير إلى أهمية دراسة الفطريات بالقول: لماذا وراثة الفطريات: ويرفق ذلك بإجابة تفيد بأن الفطريات.
موضوع هذا الكتاب "تحلل الفطريات المواد العضوية بالتربة مما يساهم بشكل كبير في زيادة خصوبة التربة، كما تنتج الفطريات بعض المضادات الحيوية وأحماض عضوية وفيتامينات، ويستخدم بعضها كغذاء مثل فطر عش الغراب والبعض الآخر يستخدم في بعض الصناعات الهامة مثل صناعة الخبز والجبن، ألا أن الفطريات تنتج أيضاً بعض السموم القاتلة مثل "الأفلاتوكسينات" وبعضها بسبب أمراض خطيرة للنبات والحيوان والإنسان، وبعضها الآخر بسبب فساد الطعام والجلود والمنسوجات.
من هنا، تأتي أهمية دراسة الوراثة الميكروبية التي تسببها الفطريات وقد قسم المؤلف دراسته إلى مقدمة شرح فيها المميزات العامة للفطريات وطرق معيشتها وأهميتها الإقتصادية واتبع ذلك بإثني عشر باباً تحيط بأنواع الفطريات ومنها الفطريات الهلامية اللزجة والفطريات الناقصة مثل فطر الألترناريا والهلمنثوسبوريم وغيرها.
كما تم معالجة إستحداث وعزل وتعيين نوعية الطفرات (الإختبار البيوكيميائي وطريقة الكروماتوجرافي وطريقة التغذية التصالبية والطريقة الوراثية)، كما درس الأسس الوراثية للطرز الجنسية في الفطريات والخرائط الكروموسومية، والإتحادات الوراثية الميتوزية الجديدة في الفطريات، وعملية إنتاج إيثانول الذرة من الخميرة ووراثة الخميرة المنشطرة، والتكاثر الجنسي واللاجنسي في الفطريات، ووراثة فطر النيورسبورا ووراثة الفطريات البازيدية والفطريات المائية ودورة حياتها...
وأخيراً وراثة فطريات الأسبرجلس والبنسيليوم وكيفية إكتشاف فطر البنسيليوم والذي أصبح معروفاً الآن بــ Penicillium Motatum على يد Alexonder Floming الذي اكتشف البنسلين في عام 1928.
