إن ما أقدّمه للقراء في هذه الأنثولوجيا هو جمع واسع لمقتطفات مختارة من الادب الصوفي على إختلاف ألوانه ومدار سنواته، وفيها ما يربو على 500 مقتطف اقتبس من نحو ثمانين كتاباً ألفه حوالي خمسين مؤلِّفاً.
وعلى الرغم من ذلك، فإن هذا العدد ليس إلا نقطة في محيط الأدب الصوفي الذي بدأ أن يظهر في القرن الثاني/ الثامن ولا يزال يغدق علينا إلى يومنا هذا.
خلال هذه المدة من ألف ومائتين سنة صُنّفت وجمعت المؤلفات الصوتية التي هي أساس هذه الأنثولوجيا في أماكن ولغات متعدّدة ومتباينة، أهمها العربية والفارسية والتركية والأردية، أما جمع هذه المواد الصوفية على شكل مجاميع فقد ظهر في القرن الرابع / العاشر.
وفي هذه الفترة، كأنما بغتةً، ظهر في جميع أرجاء العالم الإسلامي هذا الصنف من المجاميع الصوفية، وإن مؤلفي هذه المجاميع الذين كانوا متصوِّفة بأنفسهم قد ضمَّوا بين طياتها آثاراً وروايات عن شيوخ ومريدين قدماء ومعاصرين.
وصارت هذه المجاميع الحجر الأساس للتراث والتربية والآداب الصوفية، وقد عرضت المواد المتنوّعة المنثورة في هذه المجاميع مقولات الشيوخ المتصوّفة وآثارهم، وآدابهم، وأحلامهم، وكراماتهم، ووصاياهم، وأجوبة مسائلهم، ومكاتباتهم مع غيرهم، وأشعارهم، وتفاسيرهم لآيات قرآنية.
ومن خلال هذا النشاط الأدبي الكثيف تطور المعجم الصوفي الفريد بما فيه من إصطلاحات مميزة تعبر بدقة عن أفكارهم وإستنباطاتهم وأحوالهم الخاصة.
