يعد هذا الكتاب "الأصل المعروف المسبوط" من أهم مؤلفات "الشيباني" وهو الذي يقال عنه: إن الشافعي كان حفظه وألف "الأم" على محاكاة "الأصل" كما ويقال بأن حكيماً من أهل الكتاب قد أسلم بسبب مطالعة المبسوط هذا قائلاً "هذا الكتاب محمدكم الأصغر فكيف كتاب محمدكم الأكبر؟. و"المبسوط" هذا هو من أجل الكتب في الفقه وأبسطها، بل هو بحر لا ساحل له. وذلك لما يحتويه من سرد للفروع على مذهب أبي حنيفة وإلى يوسف مع بيان لرأي مصنفه في المسائل الفقهية، والشيباني فيه لا يسرد الأدلة حيث تكون الأحاديث الدالة على المسائل بمتناول جمهور الفقهاء من أهل طبقته، وإنما يسردها في مسائل ربما تغرب أدلتها عن علمهم.
