إنَّ العصر الحديث مليءٌ بالأحداث الضَّخمة، بدءاً من الحملة الفرنسية على مصر سنة 1211هــ / 1799م، ثمَّ الحملة الإنجليزيَّة على مصر سنة 1807، ثمَّ الحملة الفرنسية على الجزائر سنة 1830م، ثمَّ الحملة الفرنسية على تونس 1881م، والحملة الإنجليزيَّة على مصر سنة 1882م، ثمَّ الحملة الإيطاليَّة على ليبيا 1911م، ثمَّ إحتلال المغرب سنة 1912م، ثمَّ إحتلال العراق، وفلسطين 1918م، وإحتلال سورية سنة 1920م، وهناك جملةٌ كبيرةٌ من الأحداث وقعت في أثناء تلك السِّنين.
وفي تلك الحقبة الزَّمنية الطَّويلة التي تسمَّى: العصر الحديث: القرن الثالث عشر، الرابع عشر الهجريين / التاسع عشر، العشرين الميلاديين، في تلك الحقبة برز رجالٌ عظماء، كان لهم أثرٌ ضخمٌ في تلك الأحداث، وبذلوا، وقدَّموا، وعملوا، وأعطوا، وهوجموا، وابتلوا، وصبروا، فلم تلن لهم قناةٌ ولم يُؤْثر عنهم ضعفٌ، ولا ذلٌ، ولا هوانٌ.
لذلك، اختار المؤلف من أولئك العظماء الذين أُسدل عليهم ستار الإهمال، والنِّسيان عدداً ممَّن حفظ الزمان سيرهم في بطون الكتب ليعرضها على الناس حتى يستفيدوا من العبر، والعظات الواردة فيها، وليعرفوا تاريخهم من خلال قراءة تواريخ العظماء، فإنَّ العظماء هم صنَّاع التاريخ حقاً.
